[RSS] Rwanda Urges Global Cooperation To Bring Genocide Fugitives To Justice

Post by RSS »

Rwanda’s High Commissioner to Kenya Amb. Richard Masozera has called for global cooperation in bringing genocide fugitives to justice.

Masozera spoke Wednesday when he presided over the 29th commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda at the United Nations Complex in Nairobi.

He decried inaction on indictments issued by Rwanda against “hundreds” of actors linked to the genocide.

The Rwandan diplomat pointed out that lack of cooperation “sends a wrong message to the fugitives and is a threat to peace and security.”

“The Government of Rwanda will never tire to urge countries around the world to cooperate more effectively in the arrest and prosecution of genocide fugitives or transfer them to Rwanda,” he said.

He stated that prosecution of perpetrators of the genocide that left over 1 million people dead is crucial in the resolve to fight genocide ideology, prejudice and discrimination in all its forms.

The Rwandan Ambassador to Kenya further said that there was a need for each individual and nation across the globe to reflect on the significance of peace, social cohesion, and preventing future mass atrocities in any part of the world.

Negative genocide ideology
He pointed out that it was important for the youth to remember the events of the 1994 genocides against Tutsi arguing that “they need to be aware and constantly reminded of the consequences of ideologies that are negative and in so doing help them develop a proper moral perspective for a better tomorrow.”

To ensure that such atrocities don’t recur Ambassador Masozera added that it was imperative that every individual takes time to reflect and have an accurate understanding of what led to the genocide against Tutsi.

The ambassador also paid tribute to those who stood against the killing of the Tutsi’s and emphasized the importance of speaking out against any acts of evil against anyone.

“Even as we remember those who lost their lives it is important, we also pay tribute to those selfless heroes who resisted by risking their lives in order to help or even save those being targeted,” he said.

“Such people are a clear reminder to all of us of our duty never to remain silent or indifferent in the face of evil.”

Present at the event were the UN Resident Coordinator for Kenya Stephen Jackson, and Ambassador Susan Mwangi, Director of the UN and Multilateral Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The event which brought together members of the Rwandan community in Kenya, representatives of the Government of Kenya, diplomatic communities, military attaches, and the general public also saw the laying of a wreath and lighting of candles in honour of the lives lost during the 1994 genocide.
